PlayStation 5 Road to the Masters Golf Game

Introduction

So … why a Playstation 5 ?

  • eye skin cancer procedures couldn’t focus on my iPad World Golf Tour game
  • a reward for me getting through very tough eye stuff
  • Mark or Sam could help me if I got stuck
  • Helen would help ordering it

Starter Steps

  • Geoff tech set up
  • x20 controller buttons
  • YouTube video tutorials
  • settings = 3 click swing
  • setting auto tap in putt within 3 feet
  • created my golf avatar = Kath Bromley

At first I found it quite overwhelming & wasn’t sure where to start so I decided to play each of the 39 courses. I was struggling to use the controller right stick but things improved greatly when I discovered the controller 3 click swing method. Instead of hitting the ball into the crowd or the trees or the really heavy rough I started to find more fairways off the tee and my scores got better & better.

What works for me

  • Each game takes about an hour
  • have a break between games
  • limit to 3 games a day
  • Game 1 = record scores
  • Game 2 = practice round
  • Game 3 = one of my favourite courses
  • graphics are great
  • I like it when the PS5 controller rumbles if the shot is controlled well = which is called Haptic feedback
  • sometimes I turn the commentary off = easier to focus on the shot in hand if my head is busy already !
  • sharing it with family and friends
  • it challenges me
  • it entertains me
  • it relaxes me
  • it inspires me
  • it makes me punch the air after a fab shot for eagle or birdie !
  • gives me something positive to talk about
  • it’s about power precision & positive putting
  • it’s about focus & concentration

Shot types

DRIVING SHOT TYPES

  • DRIVE = a standard full swing shot for consistent distance and accuracy off the tee
  • POWER DRIVE = a more powerful full swing for more distance off the tee
  • STINGER = a low, powerful shot that keeps the ball under the wind and generates a lot of roll

APPROACH SHOT TYPES

  • APPROACH = a standard full swing shot for consistent distance and accuracy from terrain
  • POWER APPROACH = a more powerful full swing shot when you want more distance from terrain that comes with a larger shot dispersion circle than the Approach
  • PUNCH = a really low shot without a lot of power. Keeps the ball under the wind and generates a lot of roll. It’s used to get out of trees and back onto the playable areas.
  • KNOCK DOWN = A full swing shot that gets the ball to fly lower than a normal approach but still high enough to still land soft and stop.
  • FINESSE = a shorter, more versatile shot that can go a wide variety of distances. Used for distances between clubs on your normal approach.
  • HACK = a powerful swing shot only used from the first cut, second cut or heavy rough.

SHORT GAME SHOT TYPES

  • PITCH = a standard half swing shot that gets the ball up onto the green with a normal amount of roll out.
  • RUNNER = a lower flying half-swing shot that runs out a lot more than the Pitch.
  • SPINNER = a half-swing shot with more speed put into the impact. This generates more spin on the ball and gets it to check up instead of roll out after landing.
  • FLOP = a long swing that lobs the ball high into the air and lands softly on the green.
  • LONG FLOP = a version of the flop that goes a greater distance, but has a larger shot dispersion.
  • HIGH FLOP = a version of the flop that goes extremely high, lands and stops immediately. Useful when there is no space between the end of the green and the hole.
  • BLAST = specific to bunkers, the swing hits the sand behind the ball to loft it up out of the sand and onto the green. Causes the ball to roll out some, since the sand impact reduces the spin.
  • PICK = an alternative bunker shot. A cleaner strike that hits less sand and more of the ball, allowing for more spin and less rollout.

PUTTING SHOT TYPES

  • PUTT = a stroke that instantly gets the ball rolling and is only used on the green or fringe.
  • CHIP = a short putting stroke style with wedges and short irons that bumps the ball up into the air for a few yards and gets it rolling quickly
  • TEXAS WEDGE = a stroke with the putter that instantly gets the ball rolling but can be used when not on the green or fringe

Top Tips

  • always zoom in to have a look whats ahead when you are preparing for any shot
  • find the fairway from the tee
  • use a 3 wood instead of a driver to stay out of the rough
  • try to get approach shot within 10 feet
  • find the putting green in regulation
  • learn to shape the ball … fade = left to right / draw = right to left
  • if in trouble in the rough or a fairway bunker the priority is to get back onto the fairway
  • elevated tee = club down
  • elevated green = club up
  • allow for wind speed and direction
  • if a very long way from the hole can pitch instead of putt
  • if you intend to layup make sure you do and take a club less than you originally thought !
  • read the break carefully on every putt
  • get 1st putt up to or just past the hole because never up never in
  • go to the coaching academy to improve your skills
  • use skills points granted to enhance skills repertoire and improve your scores
  • approach shot wedges = strong full shot to allow for ball spinning backwards
  • a fade shot takes 10 yards off the yardage
  • a draw adds 10 yards on
  • downhill approach shots play shorter
  • uphill approach shots play longer
  • try to bounce back on the next hole after a bogey or double bogey with a par or a birdie
  • enjoy the slow motion dramatic thwack sound after doing an intentional maximum overswing power drive off the tee !
  • enjoy the slow motion approach shot dramatic music cos it means something special is happening !
  • enjoy the slow motion power drive dramatic music cos it means something very long is happening !

Tournaments Compete solo in online tournaments

Tournament options include daily, weekly or seasonal online tournaments . My preferred option is the daily tournament. The PS5 selects the course but my 3 click swing only works with Random events which i choose whether to play 4, 6, 9 or all 18 holes. Entry fees are as follows = Random 4 = nil / random 6 = 1,000 / random 9 = 2,000 and all 18 = 4,000. You either win pink tickets depending on your leaderboard position or you miss the rank.

Fabulous Par 4’s A-Z

The key to scoring well on par fours is to find the fairway off the tee and the dialling in your 2nd shot close enough on the green to set up a birdie chance. There are always many more par four holes on each course as opposed to par threes & par fives.

  • Augusta National = 11th hole
  • Bandon Dunes = 9th

Fantastic Par 5’s A-Z

Most of my 300 + plus eagles have come on par 5 holes. Being long off the tee plus a power shot up to or onto the green sets up an eagle chance but almost always results in a birdie.

My Matchplay Record

I used to love playing matchplay whether in my club championships or representing Hoylake, Bromborough or Brackenwood against other Wirral or Cheshire clubs.

Matchplay is an individual competition to win the most holes. Each hole is won by the player with the lowest score. If the scores are tied, the hole is halved. There are 23 golfers and 39 courses and I am very proud of my matchplay record.

My Career … Build my Legacy

I started off on the Korn Ferry Tour Just like on Sky tv golf events are played over x4 days = Thursday Friday then the cut to play at the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The field sizes range form 125 144 & 64 and you play either 4, 5 or 6 or 9 holes per round . You also wear a different outfit per round. I worked my way through the events and was excited to make it onto the PGA TOUR as a rookie. There were 32 events to compete in and . Some I qualified for automatically & others I had to have a good score to be invited to the prestigious events. The weather was always perfect , never any rain but sometimes had to contend with big winds up to 20 mph !

PGA TOUR Season 1 Stats

  • Pro Pass Level 68
  • Official World Golf ranking = 2nd 13.9
  • FedExCup Ranking = 4th 3880
  • Top 5 Finishes = 11th
  • Top 10 finishes = 5th
  • Longest Drive = 1st

I was pleased with my rookie season & learned a lot . I decided to go the the coaching academy to improve my skills ahead of Season 2 and I learned how to shape the ball left to right = a fade / right to left = a draw

PGA TOUR Season 2 Stats

  • Pro Pass Level 89
  • Official World Golf Ranking Best = 1st 13.8
  • Official World Golf Ranking Current = 1st 13.3

  • Eagles x 15 = 1st
  • Top 10 finishes x 20 = 1st
  • Top 5 finishes x 11 = 1st
  • Longest putt 45 feet = 1st

I had a good season and had made good progress but there’s always something to improve upon so I went back to the Coaching Academy ahead of Season 3 to work on gaining more driving power off the tee to improve my long drives consistently over 300 yards. I also worked on dialling in my approach iron shots which would improve my scores.

PGA Tour Season 3 Stats

  • Official World Golf Ranking Best = 1st 14.8
  • FedExCup Ranking = 1st 7751 points

  • 8 Events won = 1st
  • Top 5 finishes = 1st 17
  • Average driving distance = 1st 298 yards
  • eagles = 1st 12

This was good and showed I was on the right track developing my key skills . I was consistently much longer off the tee which was paying off but now I needed to shift my focus onto my short game. So I went back to the Coaching Academy to work on my pitching, chipping & especially putting because a good short game is the key to better scoring & winning more events. I also added a high flop & pick shot out of nearside bunker to complete my repertoire .
