Coronavirus came onto our world radar rather like a slow moving tsunami bringing with it strange, challenging and surreal times for us all. It became increasingly clear that it was to be a marathon not a sprint and that our freedoms would be curtailed. It started in Wuhan China January and the World Health Organisation warned of a global pandemic. Covid-19 cases soared in February. UK early measures varied from no handshakes, football matches being cancelled, advice not to travel abroad. Wirral Arrowe Park hospital was used as quarantine centre & Hilbre High school had a covid-19 case . It produced a dawning daily realisation of the enormity & the profound impact on all our lives … everyday life was changed dramatically meaning in reality that by the 3rd week of March the UK was facing & the middle of the biggest crisis since the 2nd World War.

My Music project
I badly needed a project that was going to occupy my increased lockdown inside time in a positive way and music seemed the thing. I hadn’t listened to any classical music since my lovely mum died in 2013 because I found it too emotional after choosing the music for her funeral. However I had lots of Classical cds & Classic-fm boxsets and felt & thought it was time to revisit them all one at a time with the aim of compiling a 20 track playlist (from over 200) which would be on my desktop Mac computer . Twenty tracks seemed appropriate … firstly to keep my bipolar over productive creative tendencies under control. I knew it would help to get through the Coronavirus months in 2020 and my Psychiatrist Dr Singh agreed. Plus I wanted to share it in cd form later whenever I could meet up with friends & family again or even perhaps send someone special to me a copy in the post . The next step was to burn a copy of the playlist for my back bedroom cd player that bother Chris got me for Xmas .
It took me a month of daily Mac morning time and I did not get emotional at all as I viewed because this as a work project. The end result was in equal measure … calming, reflective, inspiring, mindful, beautiful, joyful & relaxing and soothes my troubled soul whenever I need help on a difficult day or just in mindful moments or envisage others close to me hearing it for the first time.

STAY HOME … PROTECT THE NHS … SAVE LIVES
The Queens broadcast to the nation 5th April
I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly difficult time. A time of disruption in the life of our country. Disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many & enormous changes to the daily lives of us all. I want to thank everyone on the NHS frontline as well as care-workers & those carrying out essential roles who selflessly continue their day to day duty outside the home in support of us all. I am sure the nation will join me in reassuring you that what you do is appreciated & every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times. I also want to thank all of you who have stayed at home, thereby helping to protect the vulnerable and sparing many families who have already felt the pain of losing lost ones. Together we are tackling this disease & I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute then we will overcome it. I hope in the years to come, everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge & those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any. With the attributes of self-discipline, quiet good humoured resolve & of fellow- feeling still characterise this country. The pride in who we are is not part of our past, it defines our present and our future. The moments when the United Kingdom has come together to applaud its care & essential workers will be remembered as an expression of our national spirit, and its symbol will be the rainbows drawn by children. Across the Commonwealth & around the world, we have seen heart-warming stories of people coming together to help others, be it through delivering food parcels & medicines, checking on neighbours, or converting businesses to help the relief effort. And though self-isolating may at times be hard, many people of all faiths, and of none, are discovering that it presents an opportunity to slow down, pause & reflect, in prayer or meditation. It reminds me of the very first broadcast I made, in 1940, helped by my sister. We, as children, spoke from here at Windsor to children who had been evacuated from their homes & sent away for their own safety. Today, once again, many will feel a painful sense of separation from their loved ones. But now,as then, we know, deep down that it is the right thing to do. While we have faced challenges before, this one is different. This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science & our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed & that success will belong to everyone of us. We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return. We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again; we will meet again. But for now I send my thanks and warmest wishes to you all.

2020 … A Year in my My Wellbeing Garden
I am blessed with a beautiful garden . My garden has always been important to me … but when the Corona virus first 3 week lockdown kicked in it became crucial on a daily basis to give me a purpose and help my wellbeing. It quickly became a very quiet & calm safe space … the only sound was the beautiful birdsong from the resident robins & blackbirds.
March Week 1 Berberis Camellia
April …Week 4 Azalea Week 6
My garden is at its best in Spring and the universe gave us gardeners beautiful sunshine day after day to counteract the stress & anxiety of the lockdown. I love camellias, azaleas & rhododendrons and especially my lovely cherry tree and acers and early clematis.
May …Week 7 Clematis montana Clematis alpina
Spring through to summer
Week 10 was also important to me because of my roses because some of my lovely mum’s ashes are in them & they all have a special meaning to me. Last summer me & my neighbours Mark & Dawn embarked on a massive task to take out a 20 year old ivy & big rotten fence. I remembered being very anxious at the time because I feared me & my roses would not survive the onslaught of the drastic cut back.
1st rose joy Patio perfection den corner
Well they did and have never looked better … just wonderful ! Every day brought new flowers which went on for weeks and was such a boost to lift my spirits ashes are in them & all have a special meaning to me. I have a mixture of Old English Tea scented which are repeat flowering/ a mini patio & a fabulous pale pink climber which I just let it go wherever it wants to on the new fence. They like it where they are in my summer border because they are sheltered from the wind & enjoy full sun all day.
Old English scented David Austin Port Sunlight Mum’s climber
I became very attuned to & appreciated the variety of wildlife that shared my garden whether big or small. Bird visits included robins, blue tits, great tits, goldfinches, blackbirds, wood pigeons, wrens, sparrows, magpies, collared doves. Also honey bees, bumble bees, hover flies, butterflies & brightly coloured beetles plus occasional squirrels, bats & hedgehogs
Week 10 June … Week 11 Alstromeria
Stressors
I had to accept that the lawn would quickly become a lush weed patch so I decided that I would out of necessity just let it become wilder. Succession of Daisies, dandelions, clover, tall grasses which the birds loved hopping about in & the hedgehog came in the evening .I also had to accept that the weeds would invade my big borders so I decided to just keep x1 metre around my special plants , roses & bushes and focus my attention mindfully on the beauty of a single plant or a single flower or the best plant of the week.

May … Port Sunlight Garden Centre
Week 10 was a big positive step for me as the Govt lifted the restrictions a little allowing me to get out of my house into my car & back to my beloved Port Sunlight. I wanted to checkout the garden centre in terms of queues & social distancing and it all looked ok. I waited a few days before I felt ready to go to the garden centre . The queue was short & staff greeted me giving a trolley which helped to reinforce social distancing because there wasn’t an obvious one way system in the plant section.

During
After
It took x2 weeks to have the old bathroom removed & new wet-room installed. We were all very covid aware & masked up or met in the garden to discuss progress or any issues that arose. Day by day the work continued = removal of old fixtures tiles & window then it was rewired retiled, new fixtures level access shower , non slip floor and new window added. Both me & Bobby cat were very unsettled with the noise & disruption. At times I was quite overwhelmed and felt wired & tired throughout. I was very glad when it was all over and although it took me x3 weeks to recover I was grateful to everybody for helping to keep me going step by step. I also knew I had a team of builders who knew me well , were very aware of my anxiety & how stress affects my Bipolar but most of all who I could trust and depend on for future work.

Home & garden improvements (2) August
The other key people I needed to involve were Matt & Darren from my local Lawns & Leaves who had done garden clearance work for me in the past and knew about my bipolar and how important my garden is to me. I had a vision and a clear idea re what I wanted to achieve but needed £ pro help to enable me to achieve it step by step.
Ikebana
I don’t know if I found Ikebana or it found me …
Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arranging which I discovered whilst browsing in Port Sunlight garden centre. I like Japanese garden acers & haiku poetry and was attracted by the simple beauty of the ceramic pot & the concept of the weighted spiky Frog (kenzan) pin holder which literally means ‘sword mountain’ . This appealed to my creative side both in terms of simplistic beauty / photography and flower arranging and would give me a new interest … I chose to go with freestyle so I wouldn’t be constrained & just let it take me wherever my creativity went
- minimalist
- less is more
- elegant or quirky
- deep respect for nature
- incorporates many styles … mine is free style
- the kenzan can hold heavy or delicate stems
- use flowers and foliage either from the garden or houseplants or florist
- key aspect is balance
- can use any sort of container
- so simple … so satisfying
- keeps me calm
- lifts my spirits

MAGGIE
Home & garden improvements (3) September = French doors & furniture
The next key D&R job entailed taking out the old patio doors which hadn’t been opened for x2 years and were there when I bought the house in 1987 ! I knew I needed to take this opportunity to change the way my den & front room looked so that involved removing the big family unit that I brought back from Mum & Dad’s house. I also knew that meant letting go & decluttering the contents of the unit & the emotions that it would stir up so I talked that through with my OT keyworker Helen and psychiatrist Dr Singh. It took a while for me to get clear idea of which order to get the jobs done and space them out so I didn’t get overwhelmed but I knew what I needed =
- Matt & Darren = garden clearance left border high shrub
- D&R builders = french doors design/unit removal/furniture rearrange
- OT Helen = Mum & Dad unit declutter steps

My Autumn lockdown
It was a relief that Port Sunlight garden centre would remain open . Gina’s village florist shop had to close but she could still trade for phone collections & deliveries. My Website work

Doing my Coronavirus webpage gave me a daily purpose & became a source of self support. It also helped me process and make sense of things in very challenging and ever changing times. It gave me a focus and a structure to help understand what was going on & evolved day by day, week by week & month by month. It mapped reflected chronicled my world & our UK journey & provided a timeline. Dr Singh and my family & friends encouraged me. It helped to keep me going & was an outlet for my photography and helped me deal with the loneliness of lockdown.
